What is Modern LASIK?
Modern LASIK is a surgical procedure that can help you achieve better visual acuity and reduce dependence on visual aids such as glasses or contact lenses. How Long Does LASIK Last?
LASIK reshapes the cornea to correct the way light focuses on the back of your eye, and that reshaping is permanent.
Once Dr. Mueller reshapes your cornea, that change becomes a permanent part of your eye’s structure. That said, your eyes will still go through the normal changes everyone experiences over time as part of the natural aging process. Most people develop some degree of presbyopia in their forties, which affects near vision and has nothing to do with LASIK. Later in life, cataracts can also form, which is a separate condition treated separately from LASIK.
In rare cases, if your prescription shifts significantly years after surgery, a small enhancement procedure can fine-tune your results. For the vast majority of patients, though, LASIK provides clear, stable vision for many years without any need to revisit the correction at all.
What Is the Age Limit for LASIK?
Patients need to be at least 18 years old for LASIK, and many surgeons, including Dr. Mueller, prefer to see a stable prescription for at least a year or two before moving forward. That usually puts the ideal window somewhere in your twenties or thirties, once your eyes have finished changing shape and your prescription has settled down.
There is no strict upper age cutoff. What matters more is the health of your eyes. As patients get older, conditions like cataracts become more common, and if a cataract is already forming, cataract surgery is often a better fit than LASIK since it addresses the lens directly.
